President's Message March, 2005
Dear Fellow HFMA Members:
Greetings and welcome to the third issue of VISIONS, your HFMA Northeast Ohio Chapter newsletter. With the advent of spring (somewhere, if not here in Northern Ohio), HFMA members are busy with annual audits, cost reports, and discovering those things we missed in our 2005 budgets. |

Spring also heralds the Gerry Haggerty Annual Leadership Institute (GHALI), the Chapter's signature educational offering. This year's event at Glenmoor Country Club, held in conjunction with the Central Ohio Chapter, promises a wide range of interesting, timely topics over two days, including revenue cycle, information technology, and insurance, among others. New offerings at this year's Institute include a pre-conference workshop covering Fundamentals of Health Care Finance and an Executive Roundtable. And, as always, the Institute will have its fair share of fun, including golf, evening entertainment and a welcome reception at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

current Board Chair, to our Chapter. As you may know, Dave has accepted a new position with a hospital in North Carolina and will be leaving us in April. Dave has been among the most active Chapter volunteers for many years; his current position as Board Chair completes a four-year rotation through the Chapter's officer ranks. I've known Dave over the past three years as a tireless volunteer who was always looking for ways to improve the Chapter's services to its membership and was unafraid to take some risk in trying new things. Our Chapter's strength and vibrancy are due in no small measure to Dave's contributions. Best wishes in your new position, Dave, from the entire membership of the Northeast Ohio chapter. We'll miss you.

Congratulations to, Anthea Daniels. Anthea had a baby girl, Francesca Danielle. She was born the beginning of February and weighed 6 pounds, 4 ounces.
Robert Ettinger - Robert was promoted to Administrator of the Center for Neurological Restoration at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation as of January 3, 2005.
Dave Kilmer - Dave accepted a position with Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro, NC as Director of Finance. Dave's email address is dave.kilmer@waynehealth.org effective April 25, 2005.
Skip Galich - Skip, formerly with KPMG, accepted a new position as Senior Internal Auditor for Summa Health Systems.

SPRING / GHALI - Just around the corner

It's less than 60 days away - - The 2005 Gerry Haggerty Annual Leadership Institute. Returning to the luxurious Glenmoor Country Club in Canton, this year's program is a great combination of education and fun. In addition to earning 16 CPE hours, there are fabulous meals, outstanding accommodations, a Jack Nicklaus designed golf course, wine tasting, world class spa and workout rooms, Monte Carlo night and much more.
Your GHALI Committee has arranged for rooms at the Country Club and off site near Belden Village Mall with transportation provided. If you haven't received your reservation form in the mail, email Kathy Much at neo.hfma@earthlink.net. With many members of the Central Ohio HFMA joining us, rooms will be at a premium. Attendance is expected to be over 135 people.

Health Market Changes Prompt Use of Hospitalists Across United States
Increasing financial pressures, problems with patient flow in hospitals, a growing focus on patient safety, and rising malpractice costs have spurred the use of hospitalists, a new breed of physicians who specialize in caring for hospitalized patients, according to a study by the Center for Studying Health System Change published in the February issue of the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
Hospitalist numbers increased from a few hundred in the mid-1990s to more than 8,000 in 2003, according to information provided to HSC by the Society for Hospital Medicine, the professional society of hospitalists.
HSC examined the emerging hospitalist trend during its site visits in 2002 and 2003 to 12 nationally representative communities: Boston; Cleveland; Greenville, S.C.; Indianapolis; Lansing, Mich.; Little Rock, Ark.; Miami; Northern New Jersey; Orange County, Calif.; Phoenix; Seattle; and Syracuse, N.Y.
Hospitalists were present in at least one of the largest hospital systems in all 12 markets, and in some markets, such as Boston, most medical groups used hospitalists for the majority of admitted patients. In other communities, such as Syracuse, hospitalist programs were newer to hospitals and medical groups, and were expanding slowly.
