Presidents Message

Chuck Josey, PresidentDear Fellow HFMA members,

I’d like to introduce the Theme of HFMA’s 2009-2010 Chair, Catherine A. Jacobson, FHFMA, CPA,

Making it Count….focuses HFMA’s various services and initiatives around a core quality in its members that needs to be recognized and nurtured: the drive to make it count by putting their business leadership skills in service of improving our healthcare system.”

“A core quality in its members…..” I am always impressed with members who volunteer to support our chapter. Countless hours spent putting programs together, raising money, engaging in yearlong membership drives, preparing /presenting financials, developing newsletters, and the list goes on and on. The success of our chapter is a result of these dedicated individuals, as well as, the employers who support them in their efforts.

“The drive to make it count……” As many of you know, HFMA National has implemented performance targets for all chapters to meet. Chapters must score 75 out of 100 points in order to be a chapter in good standing. Your leadership team works hard yearlong to ensure we remain in good standing – a difficult task in these economic times. There are two key drivers that are challenging targets to meet: increase education hours per member by .5% over prior year (25 points) and maintain members at close to last year’s levels (25 points.) Your leaders are driven to reach these targets but need your continued support to maintain our chapter’s good standing.

“Business leadership skills….” By volunteering, you gain experience running a business (the chapter). You could practice being a CFO by preparing/presenting financials. Develop leadership skills hrough chairing committees, as well as, using it as a venue to try new ideas. Committee chairs work hard to ‘top’ last year’s GHALI, networking Holiday party, etc. This provides a creative and innovative outlet to practice business leadership skills.

“Improving our healthcare system”…….I cannot tell you the countless times I have applied knowledge learned at HFMA events to the “my” healthcare organization. Further, if I did not have the answer, I’ve made plenty of contacts with HFMA members outside of my organization who are a phone call or email away from helping me find an answer. Working together – our members improve our healthcare system.

“Making it Count”…….our members are driven to improve our healthcare system through building business leadership skills. Those are the core qualities in you and your fellow HFMA colleagues. Thank you for being part of our chapter.

Annual Volunteer Appreciation Outing

Volunteer Appreciation Golf Outing

Registration is currently underway for this year’s program. The golf will be play on the legendary South Course featured on the PGA Tour’s Bridgestone Invitational Tournament. Slots are filling up quick, click on the link below and register today.

We are also looking for corporate sponsors for the upcoming Annual Volunteer Appreciation golf outing. We have a formal sponsorship program described below. Additionally, we are looking for golf-related items to be used as giveaways in conjunction with the outing (sleeves of golf balls, etc.). Contact Chuck Josey for additional information.

Sponsor a Foursome – Includes full registration for the morning program, lunch and 18 holes of golf for you and three guestscost is $1,500 (this represents a $300 savings from the full, non-member registration fee)

Gerry Haggerty Annual Leadership Institute 2009

The 2009 GHALI was again held at the Kalahari Resort and Conference Center in Sandusky, Ohio. Kalahari brings “a world away” experience to travelers in the Midwest. With everything under one roof convenience, the Kalahari Resort includes spectacular indoor and outdoor waterparks, spas, extensive retail and shopping areas, multiple dining options, and authentic African experiences.

Our theme: “The Changing Landscape of Healthcare – Getting Prepared” and is truly fitting for this year so far. Healthcare reform and the rise in unemployment and uninsured along with state budget concerns, there is an abundance of areas for healthcare financial managers to focus on.

The conference included educational sessions led by healthcare industry leaders and a variety of pertinent topics, and provided attendees opportunities to research products and services present at the vendor booths during vendor fair times and throughout the 2 ½ days. In keeping with tradition, the networking opportunities were abundant with casino night, choice of 9 holes of golf at Sawmill Creek, a luxurious spa package at the Kalahari Spa or a delectable wine tasting event followed by an evening banquet, Texas Hold-em tournament and for the first time, a Cornhole tournament.

Special thanks to everyone who participated on the GHALI Planning Committee for a job well done. The reaction to this year was very positive!

Planning is underway for the 2010 GHALI. Watch for details of next year’s conference so you won’t miss out on everything this event has to offer.

An Option for the Ages

Much of the recent discussion of federal hospital mortgage insurance has tended to be directed toward smaller facilities that lacked a wide variety of financing options. Rather than being painted as a financing option for a limp economy, however, the Section 242 program should be considered as part of any hospital’s financing discussions – under any market conditions. Its competitive fixed interest rates, 25-year amortization and non-recourse nature make it an excellent choice for small independent hospitals, but also for larger facilities and for systems. Building Reporting to Assist in
Managing the Charge Capture Process

The process of obtaining reimbursement for the care provided in hospitals is a complex interdisciplinary one, requiring that people and systems are effectively aligned. Given its inherent complexity, the number and types of problems are voluminous, often occur repetitively, and re-occur even after fixes have been implemented.

In an effort to address the opportunities presented in enhancing its processes, Montefiore Medical Center initiated a charge capture reconciliation management program in 2006. The initial process began with the premise that the vanilla reports being generated out of the legacy patient accounting system were not sufficient for its needs. The immediate first step prior to initiating the program was to assess the requirements and define what data would ultimately be required. Read More…

Building Consensus Upward: How to get your strategies implemented by Senior Management

In many hospitals and healthcare systems today, strategic initiatives begin and end before they even reach the C Suite. For directors in a hospital, career growth and advancement ultimately depends on the individual’s ability to:

  1. Successfully manage multiple personnel;
  2. Lead a service line or department;
  3. Identify business problems and/or opportunities;
  4. Develop strategic initiatives that address a business challenge or opportunity; and
  5. Communicate these initiatives to Senior Management.
