Chuck Josey, PresidentDear Fellow HFMA members,

Non healthcare, finance people ask…what is HFMA? I tell them it’s a national organization for healthcare finance professionals providing a source of education and solutions for healthcare financial challenges. No offense to anyone but that usually ends the conversation on the topic! LOL!

But it’s not just that!!!!!! HFMA is about relationships! Of course, I’ve met a ton of people who’ve helped me with the technical aspects of the job. But that’s not all! HFMA provides a forum to further develop and polish the ‘soft’ professional skills.

Need help with developing ‘soft skills?’ A mentoring program can help with that. But you’re not going to see a HFMA program titled ‘Mentoring 101.’ That’s why at first glance, you might not think we offer that type of education……but we really do!

How does our mentoring program work? The first step is to get involved in chapter activities. Want to learn about group dynamics? Join a committee to see it in action! Want to learn and practice negotiation skills? Co-chair a committee! Interested in project management skills? Consider our leadership track – a four year commitment beginning as VP (program chair), President Elect (sponsorship chair), President, and then Chairman of the Board. Its pretty cool stuff!

The neat thing is - I don’t have a mentor – I actually have many mentors – through my HFMA relationships. All this is included in your annual price of membership. That’s a good value! Are you taking full advantage of your membership? Truly, soft skills can be applied outside the professional world. Consider it!

Why did you decide to get involved in HFMA?
Over the years I have had the opportunity to utilize the HFMA resources and to interact with HFMA members and staff. In evaluating what professional organization would provide value (information, networking) and contribute to my personal growth while helping me meet client needs, HFMA was a clear choice.

What activities do you enjoy outside of work?
Spending time with friends; exercising; going to the Symphony, Cleveland Playhouse, Playhouse Square and sports events; and evenings at home relaxing.

What do you like most about working in healthcare?
I enjoy the never-ending challenges that come with working in finance in the healthcare industry. Medicare and state funding changes are constant. We never know what the next policy will entail. The only thing we can be sure of is that one’s coming. This keeps my work as a financial leader of my organization very interesting. Balancing profitability with patient care is a major challenge.

What activities do you enjoy outside of work?
Other than the joy I derive from my work, I love spending time with my two boys (8 & 3). We spend a lot of time enjoying the outdoors and traveling. I just recently purchased my first horse. The joy of Western trail-riding is my latest adventure.

Save the Date for these upcoming programs

Holiday Awards Party

Mark your calendar, the Networking Committee would like to announce that the popular award winning Holiday Awards Party is back again! Our event last year won a coveted national Yerger Award.

The new and elegant Intercontinental Hotel will be the venue for the Thursday, December 3, 2009 – 6 p.m. cocktails, 7 p.m. dinner.

We again will offer CPE, great networking, music after awards and fine dining, and dancing (we can hope for another dance contest). This location provides valet parking and discounted rooms for those who need to spend the night.

We offer the same ticket price ($45) and sponsorship opportunities.

Program Recaps

Annual Volunteer Appreciation Program

We had our annual volunteer appreciation program on August 27, at Firestone Country Club in Akron. This program is held annually to recognize and thank the many volunteers who make significant contributions of their time to the chapter throughout the year. The program started out with a half day of educational sessions led off by Mitch Icehower, VP Revenue Cycle Strategy for Seimens, on the topic Next Generation Revenue Cycle Solutions. Mitch discussed aspects of the decision of whether to purchase a next generation revenue cycle solution; some of the features of these solutions; and some of the related initiatives Seimens is working on in this regard.

The second speaker of the morning was Fred Bayon, Senior Director at the Healthcare Advisory Board who presented Leadership Through the Downturn. The presentation included a summary of strategies researched by the Advisory Board for managing a healthcare organization through the current recession as well as positioning the organization for healthcare reform.

The educational programming was rounded out with an engaging presentation by Paul Sims, President of Advanced Leadership, Inc. Paul’s presentation entitled Lighting Wet Wood with the Principles of Golf drew correlations between leadership and golf. As an example, organizations benefit when all employees have well-defined goals and receive timely feedback relative to those goals. Contrasting that to golf, the goal is well-defined and the golfer receives immediate feedback after every shot.

Our chapter received four national awards in the past year, and following Paul Sims’s presentation, Chuck Josey recognized those who led the award-winning efforts as follows:

  1. Bob Matitia – Silver Award of Excellence for Certification
  2. Diane Lilko – Bronze Award of Excellence for Membership Growth and Retention
  3. Dan Hardwick – Yerger Award for improvement related to the holiday awards dinner
  4. Mary Jane Reedy – Yerger Award for improvement related to the membership survey

Following a cookout-style lunch of grilled chicken and hamburgers, attendees broke for the day’s networking activities, choosing from either golf on the famed Firestone South Course or pampering at Touch Dynamics Body and Beyond Day Spa. Our group had 48 golfing and 15 going to the spa. Both groups gave positive feedback on their experiences, and we finished out the day with drinks in Firestone’s Champion’s lounge.

Firestone’s facility is fabulous and rich in golf history. Looking at the memorabilia and thinking of all the greats that walked the course is truly awe inspiring, even for the casual golfer. We’d like to thank our sponsors for their generosity at this event, without which it would not have been a success!

2009 HFMA U.S./U.K. CFO Exchange

Since 1981, each year HFMA has sponsored a U.S./U.K. CFO exchange program, during which healthcare financial leaders from the U.S. are paired with a peer from the U.K. for purposes of examining the healthcare systems and operations in the two countries.
