Presidents Message

Chuck Josey, PresidentDear Fellow HFMA members,

Happy New Year! Kudos to Dan Hardwick and the Network committee for another wonderful evening of holiday cheer and awards at the Holiday Party! The elegant evening held at the Intercontinental Hotel featured our annual awards ceremony. National HFMA established the Founders Merit Award Series to acknowledge volunteers who contribute their time, ideas, and energy to serve our chapter. Congratulations to Jack Bailey, Lisa Geiger, Diane Lilko, and Mike Manfull for earning the Bronze Follmer Award; Rick Jorz, Bob Matitia, Mary Jane Reedy, and Michael Scocos for earning the Robert Reeves Silver Award; Suzi Tschetter for earning the Founder Medal of Honor, a distinction conferred by nomination of the Chapter Board of Directors and Chuck Josey for earning the D.W. Reed Award. Thanks for volunteering your time to Make it Count!

Interested in joining the ranks of HFMA Certified Healthcare Financial Professionals (CHFP) or Fellow of HFMA (FHFMA) leaders Tom O'Neill, Don Paulson, Mike Szubski, or Karen Mihalik? HFMA's certification programs prepare you for increasingly responsible positions in the healthcare finance industry. Certification demonstrates your comprehensive understanding of healthcare financial management overall, as well as your proficiency in one or more specialty areas of healthcare finance. Our certification committee, led by Bob Matitia, supports these important designations by making self-study materials available (for free) to those interested in pursuing the respected CHFP or FHFMA designation along with other certification benefits. For more information, please contact Bob Matitia at or Geoff Himes at

Please mark your calendars to attend the following events! NEOHFMA is partnering with AAHAM for a ‘Super’ PFS program on Friday, February 19. At the Akron General Wellness Center, this all day program is offered at a low, advanced purchase price of $50 and includes a networking social hour. On Thursday, March 18, the membership committee is hosting the first, March Madness and Healthcare 101 program at the Doubletree on Rockside Road. Healthcare 101 is for those wanting to learn basics of healthcare finance in areas outside of their expertise or for newer members in the healthcare industry. After the program, please join us at Shula’s for networking and March Madness. Lastly, save the date for the Gerry Haggerty Annual Leadership Institute, May 19-21. This year’s event will return to Glenmoor Country Club. Looking forward to seeing you soon!
