President’s Message

Susan FlahertyDear Fellow HFMA Members,

Dear Fellow HFMA Members: Happy New Year! I hope that all of you enjoyed the holiday season. Many thanks to our Networking committee, chaired by Ray Camma and Ty Otto, for the wonderful evening at our annual Holiday Party and Awards Dinner held at the Hard Rock Café in December 2011. Congratulations to the members who received awards and thank you for your continued active participation in the Chapter.

As the new year begins, many of us take the opportunity to re-establish personal and professional goals. HFMA has many resources available to help with your professional goals and I encourage you to take advantage of them to receive full value from your HFMA membership. In addition to the vast amount of healthcare industry information available on the National HFMA website and in the monthly magazine, HFMA offers a variety of high quality, low cost education and networking events locally and nationally. Upcoming are two of our Chapters’ most popular and well attended events – the Patient Financial Services program on February 17, 2012 and the Healthcare Financial Issues program on March 15, 2012. Each program will also include time for networking with other attendees. HFMA also offers the Certified Healthcare Financial Professional designation. Our Chapter has scholarships available that can offset a portion of study material and exam costs if your employer does not reimburse for the expenses. Check out the Northeast Ohio or National HFMA website for more information. Finally, HFMA offers opportunities for members to assume leadership roles. Active participation in HFMA at the national, regional, and/or chapter levels provides members with numerous opportunities for professional development, information, and networking. We are always looking for members to get involved in our Chapter. Please don't hesitate to contact me, one of the other Chapter officers or directors, or a committee chair if you are interested in volunteering.

Thank you to all who responded to the membership survey conducted in November 2011. We recently received the results and are pleased that 65% of the respondents were overall highly satisfied with membership in our Chapter. That percentage exceeds the National HFMA high satisfaction metric of 55% and the average high satisfaction for all chapters of 62%. The officers, board of directors, and committee members work hard to bring value to the membership, and we appreciate the feedback, including the comments on what you like about the Chapter and opportunities for improvement. We will discuss the results of the survey, particularly the education topics of interest to you and the suggestions for improvement, at future officer, board of directors, and committee meetings.

Why did you decide to get involved in HFMA?
I became involved with HFMA because of their reputation of providing industry education and compliance updates in the ever changing landscape of the Healthcare industry.

Where did you go to college?
I attended Tiffin University for my undergrad, Baldwin Wallace for my Graduate Studies, and possess several Treasury, Credit, and Cash Flow certifications.

Visit to get more information on earning the CHFP designation. The format and requirements for certification recently changed. Instead of sitting for a core and a specialty exam, there is now only one exam! Studying for the exam has changed too, from bulky printed binders to on-line study materials. So, if you’ve been thinking about adding the CHFP to your credentials but haven’t gotten around to it yet, now is the time to take action. Hot Healthcare Topics in a Cool Setting! – Strategies for Surviving on Medicare Reimbursement

This seminar was held at the Gervasi Vineyard in Canton, Ohio on November 17, 2011. This “cool” setting provided for an enjoyable and educational event, which enabled HFMA members and attendees to be educated on the current hot topics surrounding the healthcare industry.

Charles Cataline, Senior Director Health Policy, OHA, provided an update of the activities going on at the OHA. Suzanne Tschetter, Director PFS and Financial Reporting, Cleveland Clinic, presented the HFMA Map Application, which is a web-based application that helps hospitals track revenue cycle performance compared to industry metrics, industry leaders, and peer groups.

HFMA President & CEO Clarke to Retire in 2012

Richard L. Clarke, DHA, FHFMA, HFMA president and CEO, recently announced that he will retire July 31, 2012, after more than 25 years of service to the Association.

Clarke has been president and CEO of HFMA since 1986. During his tenure, HFMA has experienced membership and operating revenue growth as well as broad influence in improving healthcare efficiency and effectiveness through initiatives such as the PATIENT FRIENDLY BILLING® project. Clarke has been named one of Modern Healthcare magazine’s “100 Most Powerful in Health Care” for nine consecutive years, and is one of only 12 healthcare leaders who have made the list every year since its inception.

“HFMA has become the indispensable resource for healthcare finance under Dick’s leadership,” said Gregory M. Adams, FHFMA, HFMA Board chair and senior vice president and partner at Panacea Healthcare Solutions, LLC. “His vision for value-driven health care, his passion for education and continuous improvement, and his ability to bring together diverse perspectives has benefitted HFMA’s members, their organizations, and their communities.”

With the announcement, HFMA will soon begin its search for a successor, ensuring a smooth transition for HFMA’s 37,000 members across the nation. A search committee has been formed of volunteer leaders with diverse HFMA and industry experience to best represent the association’s members in this effort. This committee will work with a search firm to identify and assess potential candidates.

Clarke is a past chair of the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education and a former chair of AHA Financial Solutions, Inc. Additionally he has served on the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s Advisory Council. He currently serves on several committees and the Board of Directors of CHRISTUS Health in Dallas, Texas, as well as the Finance and Strategy Committee for Catholic Healthcare Partners in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Clarke holds an instructor faculty position in the Department of Health Systems Management at Rush University in Chicago and the MBA in Health program for the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.

Reflecting on his time leading HFMA, Clarke says, “Every day for the past 25 years, I have been impressed by the dedication of HFMA members not only to the association, but to their role in improving our nation’s health. It has been an honor to serve with them and to support the mission of HFMA.”

2012 will be a watershed year for physician practices across the country as thousands of physicians will be converting from paper chart files and adopting an electronic healthcare record (EHR) to take advantage of Medicare financial incentives.
