President’s Message

Susan FlahertyDear Fellow HFMA Members,

It is hard to believe that nearly one year has passed since becoming the Chapter’s President. As we prepare to transition leadership, I want to thank everyone who has been an active member in the Chapter over the last year -- the Chapter officers and directors, those who have served on committees, and all of you who have attended Chapter events. It is your involvement that makes the Chapter strong. I would also like to thank Kathy Much for her assistance as the chapter coordinator. As many of you know, the leadership team changes each year, but Kathy is the constant for our Chapter and serves our membership well.

At the beginning of the fiscal year, the Chapter officers and directors established specific goals related to education, certification, membership, member satisfaction, and other administrative metrics, in line with National HFMA’s requirements for each chapter. We will exceed many of these goals, including having four newly Certified Healthcare Financial Professionals for which we will win a National HFMA award, increasing education hours per member over the prior year and goal, and receiving a 65% overall highly satisfied rating on the membership survey (exceeding the National HFMA high satisfaction metric of 55% and the average high satisfaction for all chapters of 62%). Thanks to all of you who helped our Chapter reach these goals.

It is spring and that means the Gerry Haggerty Annual Leadership Institute (GHALI) is coming soon. For those of you who have not attended this regional conference in the last few years, it is 2-½ days of outstanding education and networking. GHALI is our most attended event of the year and I encourage you to attend. This year’s GHALI is May 16-18 at the Bertram Inn and Conference Center in Aurora. Check out the Chapter website for additional information on topics and speakers, networking events, social activities, and registration instructions.

The new leadership team, led by Diane Lilko from University Hospitals, has already begun planning for the upcoming year. The team recently attended the National HFMA Leadership Training Conference and has outlined many goals and events for the upcoming year. The individuals on the leadership team have been active in the Chapter for many years and are committed to making the Chapter even better. I look forward to continuing my active involvement with the Chapter and would encourage you to become more involved if you are not already. We are always looking for new individuals to get involved in the Chapter by serving on committees, speaking at education events, and attending events. Please don't hesitate to contact one of the Chapter officers or directors or a committee chair if you are interested in volunteering.

Tracking and Responding to Healthcare Finance Issues

We held our annual Spring program on March 15, 2012 at the Doubletree Hotel in Independence, Ohio. The all day seminar was well attended with almost 100 participants in attendance! The session started with a presentation by Ben Kimmel, Assistant Director of Fiscal Services at the Cleveland Clinic. Ben shared what the Clinic has developed over the years to have desktop access to enterprise financial information. Following Ben was Richard Blake, Criminal and White Collar Defense Attorney at Bricker & Eckler LLP. Richard provided a lively presentation involving how to prepare your organization for government investigations. During lunch, Cory Laske, Senior Commercial Account Officer with First American Healthcare Finance, shared the process involved with becoming a HFMA Peer Reviewed Company. Chris Milligan, Associate VP, Nationals Sales at Human Arc, provided his insights on the personal importance of HFMA to him and the great experiences he has had. Jane Berkebile, VP Revenue Cycle at Ohio Health, presented how her organization won the HFMA MAP Award. The program concluded with a finance round table discussion including Mike Harrington, Corporate Controller and Chief Accounting Officer at the Cleveland Clinic Health System; Chuck Josey, Vice President of Finance at Lake Health; and Mike Vehovec, vice President and Corporate Controller for University Hospitals.

Health Care Hot Topics Part III

We held another successful: Roadshow at Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio. The half day seminar was well attended with almost 75 participants in attendance! The session included presentations from Frank T. Sossi, Brennan Manna and Diamond, Joyce Mohler, System Director of Reimburesment, Summa Health System, and Dr. Richard Kunnes, MD managing principle CEO The Sevenex Group, LLC. Topics included Prospective Payments, Health Care Reform and related Stark Law issues and cost reduction.

Patient Financial Services, February 17, 2012

The annual joint HFMA and AAHAM Patient Financial Services meeting was held on February 17, 2012 at Corporate College East with over 110 PFS professionals from throughout NE Ohio in attendance. This year’s theme was “PFS Changes Are Coming-Will You Be Ready?”.

Leading off was Charles Cataline, Senior Director, Health Policy at OHA. Charles shared a wealth of information that encompassed:

  • Ohio 2012-2013 budget updates, including:
    • Status of Hospital Franchise Fee Program and Medicaid
    • Managed care incentive payments
    • Mid-biennial budget review
  • Medicaid program updates, including:
    • Modernizing hospital payments
    • 2013 Managed Care RFA
    • RAC updates and expectations
  • Medicare updates including:
    • MAC conversion status and updates
    • Medicare RAC demand letters (status and updates)
  • BWC and Other program updates pertinent to the healthcare industry and leaders

In anticipation of the ICD-10 implementation, now delayed until October 1, 2014, the transition to ICD-10 is a fundamental change that has many healthcare executives asking how they will be able to effectively mitigate their risks. Jill Barber (Director of Managed Care Operations, Southwest General Hospital) and Joan Scully (Scully Healthcare Consulting, Inc) shared their case study of how they partnered with McGladrey, using technology to minimize the impact of the ICD-10 conversion on their revenue cycle management. Specifically, they demonstrated how their tool provides insight on coding deficiencies, CDI opportunities, resource deployment, and the related financial impact by service line or physician.

Timothy Leibmann, Chairman and CEO of SunRx, Inc., presented on 340B and DSH Hospitals. Specifically, Mr. Leibmann discussed how 340B offers hospitals a way to significantly increase revenues, reduce employee benefit costs, and expand access to affordable medications for uninsured/underinsured patients. Although many hospitals use 340B split billing systems today, these programs typically miss a majority of 340B eligible patients – those who have their prescriptions filled outside of the hospital. However, Timothy reviewed how regulations allow hospitals to dispense 340B medications through retail contract pharmacy networks, and how the latest technology can make managing these networks convenient and cost effective.

Janet Kendall White, President of Berkshire Group, Inc., delivered an energetic and informative presentation that focused on the DISC Model of Human Behavior. During this interactive session, Janet’s presentation provided us with a better understanding of ourselves through our own personality styles, how to better understand others through their styles, and then how to begin adapting our styles to work better with others. This session was not only fun, but a refreshing break from the norm of healthcare finance and industry updates, and was something of significant value and use for all our membership and leaders today.

Our final presenter was Chad Mulvany, HFMA National’s Technical Director, on the topic of Accountable Care Organizations. Policy experts and politicians believe that ACO’s have the potential to improve quality and reduce costs by realigning the financial incentives within Medicare to reward high value providers. As providers consider participating in the Medicare Shared Savings Program, they must clearly understand the rules’ implications and its impact on the revenue cycle. Regardless of whether or not an organization participates in the Medicare Shared Savings Program, there are certain capabilities they will need to develop to improve the value of care they deliver. Chad provided our members with a clear understanding of the ACO regulatory environment and the barriers that may exist to forming ACO’s, as well as the revenue cycle implications of an ACO delivery model and the operational capabilities necessary to provide high value care.

This year’s full-day program was packed with knowledge and valuable takeaway resources for our attendees, and was capped off with a fun networking and social hour after the event.
